Addressing the swarf challenge

Milling operations cause metallic debris, swarf, to enter the mud return flow. To avoid swarf reaching the BOP cavities and the topside equipment, magnets are installed in the drill string. However, as swarf builds up on the magnets, the magnetic effect decreases, causing some swarf to pass. This results in operational rig time being spent on clean-up runs and, in some cases, pulling of the BOP.

The Solution

Swarfix captures and stores 100% of the metal debris, avoiding well clean-up runs and pulling of the BOP. The tool is based on a magnetic rod surrounded by a high grade, non-magnetic steel screw. A specially designed rolling anchor keeps the Conveyor Screw static during operation, continuously moving the swarf captured by the Magnet Sleeve down into the container and simultaneously keeping the Magnet Sleeve clean to maintain full magnetic strength. The volume of the container is designed to accommodate all the swarf from the window milling operation.

Swarfix is currently available for 13 3/8” milling operations, but may also be used for 13 5/8” or 14” casing sizes. Swarfix WCT for other size casing window milling operations will be available based on request.

Applications

Whipstock Window Milling

Swarfix captures and stores 100% of the metal debris in one safe, easy and efficient operation.

Applications

BOP Cleaning

1

Swarfix can easily be adapted, with a nozzle jet tool, to clean the BOP.

2

High pressure nozzles clean the BOP. Swarf passes up to the Swarfix tool.

3

The Swarfix tool collect and store the swarf from the BOP. No clean-up runs needed.
